Online Voter ID Card Registration, Correction or Change – Application Process

A voter identification card allows the holder to participate in elections and elect representatives who will be administering the country, promulgate the laws and govern the country. The Constitution of India grants all citizens of India over 18 years of age the right to vote, with reasonable restrictions. For exercising the right one need to go for online voter id card registration. This activity, however, can also be done offline.

A voter ID card also serves as an official document for proof of identity and address. As a voter identification card holder, you can use your card to register and vote in elections and also as an identity document whenever and wherever you feel necessary or the enforcers of law demand it.

As is evident from the above, a Voter ID Card is one of the important Citizen identity document but many of us delay the process of Online Voter ID Card Registration or Transfer and some of us don’t get it done after loss or mutilation of voter card thinking that it is a cumbersome job.

Now the Election Commission has taken an extraordinary decision to help citizens from the trouble. One can apply for his Voter ID card from his/her home now. Not only Online Voter ID Card Registration, getting a duplicate voter card, change of address etc. can be done from the comfort of one’s home only by pressing some clicks… !!

Condition:

    • If you have moved your permanent residence from one electoral constituency to another, you will need to update the new residential address on your voter ID card.
    • Your name must be transferred from the electoral roll of your old electoral constituency to the new constituency’s electoral roll.
    • Otherwise, you can not vote in any of the electoral constituencies. A voter identification is not only your ticket to cast votes in national, assembly, municipal or panchayat elections, but also serves as proof of identity and your residence proof.
    • It is against the law to apply for a voter ID in the new constituency. You can simply update your address on the electoral rolls of the constituency corresponding to your new place of residence and you will be issued a new voter ID card.

1. Procedure for Online Voter ID Card Registration:

With Form 6, you can request for registration of a new voter or issue a new voter card because of a change of your residence or permanent address from one constituency to another. You can submit your application online at the NVSP website or visit the nearest election office in your area. You must provide proof of your age and proof of your residence. The list of documents which are acceptable is given below.

List of age test document

  • Birth certificate issued by the municipal authorities or the district office of the Birth and Death or Baptism Registry; or
  • Birth certificate of the school (government / recognized) attended by the applicant or any other recognized educational institution; or
  • If a person in class 10 or more passes, they must provide a copy of the class 10 score sheet, if it contains the date of birth as proof of the date of birth; or
  • Class 8 marksheet if it contains date of birth; or
  • Class 5 marksheet if it contains date of birth; or
  • Indian passport; or
  • Pan card; or
  • Driver’s license ; or
  • Letter from Aadhar issued by UIDAI.

Residency test document list

  • Current Bank Pass / Kisan / Post Office; or
  • Ration card; or
  • Passport or
  • Driver’s license ; or
  • Income Tax Evaluation Order; or
  • Last rental contract; or
  • The last water / telephone / electricity / gas connection bill for that address, either in the name of the applicant or their immediate relationship as parents, etc. or
  • Any postal mail / letter / mail delivered through the Postal Department of India in the name of the applicant at the address of habitual residence.

The online method for correcting / updating voter identification:

  • You need to press the button on “Apply online for registration of new voter/due to shifting from AC”. This will take you to “Form-6” on the next page (ref the image on the right-hand side ➡️➡️)
  • Here you will be able to request for registration of a voter.
  • Enter the details in the form.
  • Your State, district and Assembly/Parliamentary Constituency details
  • then you are required to click the radio button (small circular button) to chose whether you are trying to register a new voter or whether you are shifting from another constituency
  • Enter the name, surname, name of the relative, surname of the relative, type of relation, age and gender etc.
  • Provide details of the current address of the applicant
  • Provide details of the permanent address of the applicant
  • Click disability particulars (if applicable)
  • Upload scanned or soft copy of your photograph, scanned supporting documents for age proof and address proof etc.
  • Enter your place of birth
  • Select state and district
  • Mention the date this request is made
  • Mention the place from which you are making this request (city/town/village)
  • Enter the captcha code
  • Check the information provided by you and click on the “Submit” tab.

2. Procedure for Application for correction to particulars entered in electoral roll: 

With Form 8, you can request a change of your photograph, address, date of birth, name of the relative, type of relation, gender etc. on the election card. You can submit your Online Voter ID Card application online at the NVSP website or visit the nearest election office in your area. You must provide proof for whatever entry you want to be changed. For the list of acceptable documents please refer above.

The online method for correcting / updating voter identification:

  • Click on “Correction of entries in the electoral roll” this will take you to “Form -8” on the next page where you can request the correction of the voter card. (ref the image on the right-hand side ➡️➡️)
  • Enter the details in the form.
  • Enter your name, surname
  • Your State, district and Assembly/Parliamentary Constituency details
  • Please tick the entry that you want to be corrected like the photograph, age, address, date of birth etc.
  • Then enter the correct entry which you want to be incorporated
  • Provide your email id
  • Provide your mobile number
  • Once this information is provided, upload supporting documents, such as the most recent photo, scanned proof of applicable document from the list mentioned above
  • select the type of document uploaded viz driving license or PAN Card or electricity bill or phone bill etc.
  • Enter the place from which you make the request (city)
  • Mention the date this request is made to correct the changes in your voter ID.
  • Provide the captcha details/code
  • Check the information provided by you and click on the “Submit” tab.

3. Procedure for Application for transposition of entry in electoral roll of the same electoral constituency:

This is applicable in case of Shifting from One Place of Residence to Another Place of Residence within the Same Constituency.

With Form 8A, you can request a change of your photograph, address, date of birth, the name of the relative, type of relation, gender etc. on the election card. You can submit your Online Voter ID Card application online at the NVSP website or visit the nearest election office in your area. You are required to submit proof of shifting your place of residence. A list of acceptable list of documents is given below:-

Acceptable Documents to Prove New Place of Residence

  • Current Bank Pass / Kisan / Postal Office; or
  • Ration card; or
  • Passport or
  • Driver’s license ; or
  • Income Tax Evaluation Order; or
  • Last rental contract; or
  • The last water / telephone / electricity / gas connection bill for that address, either in the name of the applicant or their immediate relationship as parents, etc. or
  • Any postal mail / letter / mail delivered through the Postal Department of India in the name of the applicant at the address of habitual residence.

The online method for correcting / updating voter identification:

  • Click on “Transposition within Assembly”. This will take you to “Form -8A” on the next page (ref the image on the right-hand side ➡️➡️)
  • Here you will be able to request the correction(s) to be made on the voter card.
  • Enter the details in the form.
  • Your State, district and Assembly/Parliamentary Constituency details
  • Name, gender, age, the part number of the electoral list and serial number
  • Provide details of the family, including the name of the father/mother/ husband
  • Enter details of previous voter card (if already issued in the past)
  • Enter details of any Family electronic voter card number
  • Enter your email id (preferable)
  • Enter your mobile number (preferably this mobile number should not be changed till you get your new voter ID card)
  • Enter your full address where you have shifted
  • Once this information is provided, upload supporting documents, as applicable (ref corresponding list above) such as the most recent photo, proof of valid identification and proof of address.
  • Enter the place from which you make the request (city/town/village)
  • Mention the date this request is made to correct the name on your voter ID.
  • Check the information provided by you and click on the “Submit” tab.

4. Procedure for Application Shifting from One Constituency to Another.

This procedure is the same as Procedure for registration as a new voter. Hence, refer to Procedure for Registration (Form6) above

After you have appealed for the Online Voter ID Card issuance, the Election commission officer will see the documents. Check the supporting documents uploaded.

If everything is as per the requirement of law, then within 1 month, your Online Voter ID Card application will be approved and you should be receiving your voter ID card in your home by post.
